The Sea Inside Me
Title jacket design and art direction for Sarah Dobb’s Dystopian Sci-Fi novel: “The Sea Inside Me” published by Unthank books.
Set in the near-future, the novel’s cover needed to heavily reinforce the fact that it was Science fiction, the client keen to reference the classic Sci-Fi book covers of JG Ballard and Phillip K Dick without becoming reminiscent of a standard female literary fiction cover.
Researching the references given by the client, a variety of ideas were conceived which were then translated into thumbnail sketches and compositions. These ideas were pitched to Robot Mascot which they then helped me to develop. Together we worked on combining these ideas with typography and compositions, referencing the collection of typographical references, artist images, existing covers and stock images that had been assembled.
I played with the idea of taking an image out of context and appropriating it, transforming vintage salon machines into hyper science fiction technology and manipulating the nature of artist Andrew Dix’s whimsical paintings.
